Mahira and Mehwish to both win this year as LSAs revamp their categories

Lux Style Awards (LSAs) have been the oldest running awards in our country ever since their inception in 2002. An amalgamation of Films, TV, and all things Fashion related, every year, the who’s who of the industry are showered with accolades in their respective fields at LSAs. And somehow, it seems the same people are praised over and over again despite what they present to the audience.

They say, “what’s in a name?” We think in this day and age, a name gets you places, with or without talent. Considering how consumer and jury preferences have vastly differed in past, LSAs have made some noticeable changes in the nominations for the year 2019.

The Changes in Categories

The categories for ‘Best Actor and Actress (Critics) have been added in both, Film and TV lists, whereas the awards for ‘Supporting Actor and Actress’ have been slashed off.

In addition to this, the public will also get to vote for their favourite stars per se. Keeping in view that Mahira Khan was given the applaud for Verna last year, while the critics were rooting for Mehwish Hayat for her performance in Punjab Nahi Jaungi, the move brings a win-win situation for all.

In terms of fashion, we saw our designers make a move into the production of lawn clothing a few years back when they saw growth in that sector. This, honestly, made them ‘jack of all trades but master of none,’ and led to Sana Safinaz (who by the way cost an arm and leg) being repeatedly awarded every year in the Casual Wear category.

Thankfully though, the LSA authorities have decided to get rid of that award now. The designers, however, would have, more or less, the same chances to win in the ‘Bridal Couture’ category, which has been upgraded from ‘Best Bridal’.

Moving onto the music industry, all hail gender equality, as both the male and female singers are being pitted against each other instead of two separate categories. The stakes are definitely high on this one, as we all know how patriarchy rules in our side of the world!

Further, removing the ‘Album of the Year’ and ‘Music Video Director of the Year’ categories, a ‘Best Song of the Year’ (barring any gender) has been added. As music explores various genres throughout the year, we believe this to be a smart move on behalf of the jury.

Lastly, our favourite has to be the addition of ‘Best Emerging Talent’ in the television category, along with Fashion and Music. In our humble opinion, we believe this addition will work as a motivating factor in bringing in more ‘stars’ to attend the event.

Cheers to a new, improved, and unbiased LSA 2019!
