Pakistanis in the recent past have come across numerous reports of the country’s possible foray into the world of web series. These reports, however, have had nothing practical to show for themselves. Up until now. A Pakistan based production company, Wingman Films, is working in collaboration with Hollywood’s bigwigs to produce a supernatural-thriller episodic series, tentatively named, Djinn.
The script of the series is composed by two American writers who went through an extensive pre-production phase encompassing two years. Among other things, the creators spent a considerable time researching different kinds of Djinns and even creating a parallel world that would also have a unique language.
Hamza Ali Abbasi and Emily Blunt Together?
The first season will be shot in multiple locations in Pakistan, US, and China, and will consist of an ensemble cast from all these countries. While no names are finalised yet, producers wish to have Hollywood’s A-list TV and film actors like Emily Blunt, Bryce Dallas, and Katherine Winnick in the cast. From Pakistan, Hamza Ali Abbasi’s presence is almost confirmed for the maiden season as per one of the producers.
According to one interview of the producer Ali Murtaza, the plot is set in the northwest Pakistan, where a local teenager boy is in the pursuit of collecting ‘lost stones’ that would protect the world against Djinns taking it over. It is extrapolated from the tale of King Solomon and his 72 Djinns and will have horror elements to it. The shooting for the series begins in 2019.
VFX Like Batman
The Wingman Films is spearheaded by Ali Murtaza (Producer, Dekh Magar Pyar Se and The legend of Maula Jatt), Yasir Tipu Khan and Mohammad Omar. The folks have roped in Brian Adler, one of the finest VFX producers in Hollywood, possessing projects like Justice League, Black Panther, Batman versus Superman, 300, Hunger Games, and Furious 7, to name a few, under his belt.
Adler is currently producing VFX for Bilal Lashari’s The Legend of Maula Jatt and will be donning the executive producer’s cap for the series.
With Djinn, the production house will prove itself to be the pioneer of Pakistan’s representation at the global streaming networks, as the makers plan to pitch the project to platforms like Netflix or Amazon Prime. As parallel efforts, the people behind the series are also said to be in talks with TV channels like ABC and Fox.
We at Galaxy Lollywood wish all the best to Wingman films and hope this ambitious plan materializes soon enough so that we get to enjoy this marvel from Pakistan.
