Exclusive: Sajal Aly and Ahad Raza Mir got married last night in Canada

Literally (well I know I am not using the term correctly here but hello, what I am about to tell you totally justifies using it) all of us know about Sajal Aly and Ahad Raza Mir’s adorable relationship. They have been all over our TV screens and social media, for the past many many months. Be it Mama Mir’s Instagram account or the actors’ own, the two are everywhere (and honestly, we are not complaining).

Some background on their relationship

Sajal and Ahad became everyone’s favorites as Asfi and Zubia after their blockbuster drama Yaqeen Ka Safar was aired on our televisions.

Last year in August, in an interview with BBC Asian Network, Ahad addressed the speculations regarding his relationship with Sajal Aly. While he did not deny or accept the possibility of a relationship between the two, he had the following to say: “I’ve met Sajal at a really good time in my life. She knows me for who I am, which I think is a beautiful thing. I’ve loved working with her. Apart from that, she’s a very special individual. I think we’re both huge supporters of each other. My family is a big supporter of her. We love her, we love her work. She’s a fantastic person.”

And honestly, this was enough for us, hopeless romantics, to keep going.

Here is the real deal

Having said that, turns out the couple got married last night in an intimate gathering in Canada, as per our internal sources, close to the family. I KNOW, I KNOW! I AM EQUALLY EXCITED AND AWE-STRUCK!

According to our sources, only a handful of people were invited to the ceremony, including the couple’s close friends and family. The wedding took place in Toronto and it was, what we usually call an intimate affair. While we do not have many details about the ceremony itself, I think we can make our peace with the fact that one of our favorite couples – on and off-screen – has finally tied the knot.

It is also being said that the reason the two wanted to keep their wedding hush-hush is because they wanted to have it just for themselves and not for the public (and again, we are not complaining. To each their own, I guess).

We are currently in touch with our sources and we’ll update you as soon as we find out more details. For now, we just know that Sajal did not dress up as a quintessential red-dress bride for she opted for a rather subtle look, with even subtler colors. Stay tuned to Galaxy Lollywood for Ahad and Sajal ki Shadi ki pictures and more details about the ceremony.

And oh! Happy April Fool’s DAY!

Lux Style Awards 2019 nominations: Is the list really all that controversial?

$

Would it even be Lux Style Awards without controversies? The nominations for this year’s 18th Lux Style Awards, which will be held in July, are out and thus, follow the customary reactions of shock and outrage. A quick glimpse at the long list of nominations – which cover all forms of mainstream Pakistani entertainment; from film to fashion to music – shows that there are some definite ‘wins’ in the nominations. However, it is the ‘snubs’, which have become a tradition of sorts for LSA, that have made their presence known quite clearly.

So, is the list really all that controversial? Well, let’s see how the industry folks have reacted to it:

Critical and commercial successes ignored

Mohsin Abbas Haider, who has been nominated in the ‘Best Singer’ category took to his social media and called out the LSAs for blatantly ignoring his play Meri Guriya in all the drama related categories. The drama has Mohsin playing the role of the antagonist, a sexual predator who targets unsuspecting young girls specifically and has highlighted the gravely prevalent social issue of child abuse.

Mohsin called the snub as “disrespectful” towards the entire team of Meri Guriya and frankly, we don’t disagree.

Instagram Photo

Abdullah Seja, head honcho of iDream Entertainment, also voiced out his disappointment. Having produced dramas like Koi Chand Rakh, Haiwan, and Meri Beti, Abdullah used Facebook to talk about the way all the dramas were ignored in the nominations.

His post started by talking of actors Faysal Qureshi, Ayeza Khan, Areeba Habib, and Saheefa Jabbar Khatak, and called out the LSAs for ignoring them in all the best actor categories. He pointed out the clear absence of Koi Chand Rakh from the ‘Best Drama’ and ‘Best OST’ category and talked about how the drama was a ratings and online hit and its OST video had more than 13 million views on Youtube.

Shani Arshad, the composer of Koi Chand Rakh’s OST, made a point on twitter and called out the jury for not doing thorough research while making the nomination list. He pointed out how Koi Chand Rakh’s official video on Youtube had way more views than most of the nominated OSTs for the award.

Shani does make a solid case here. When the snubbed OST has raked in close to 14 million views on Youtube and one of the nominated OSTs hasn’t even garnered three thousand views on its official video, the situation does start to look very fishy.

The interesting comment sections

The comments under Abdullah’s post had many names from the industry agreeing with him with rather interesting comments of their own.

For instance, Imran Abbas called the awards as “SUX Style Awards” and said there are no credible award shows in Pakistan, to begin with. Ramsha Khan talked about how actors like Faysal Qureshi and Ayeza Khan don’t need awards as the appreciation of the audience that they get is what matters the most. She, too, cryptically commented about “how these awards work” and that award shows in this country don’t matter.

Syed Jibran ignored all the drama related to the dramas and just asked how two actors from the film Cake managed to bag the ‘Best Actor’ nominees? Nadia Khan chimed in to agree with Abdullah while Faysal Qureshi let his sarcastic laugh comment do the talking. Writers Saima Akram Chaudhry (writer of Suno Chanda and another snub of the year) and Maha Malik (Koi Chand Rakh) used the idiom “andha baante revdi phir apno ko de” to succinctly express their views (can y’all please hold on? Let us just grab our popcorn).

Trouble for Teefa

The film categories weren’t lacking any drama either. Ahsan Rahim, director of Teefa in Trouble, made a post on his twitter account and spoke about how the film’s music was completely ignored by the jury.

He, too, posted screenshots of the Youtube views the film’s songs have gotten, alongside his post where he called out the “certain biases of certain people” as being the reason for the snub. He requested the “credible voices in the industry and media to raise their voices against the open bias and discrimination for a healthy and credible industry.”

It is to be noted here that while the music of the film hasn’t been given any nod of acknowledgment from the jury, the film has been nominated in the ‘Best Film’ category while Ahsan has been nominated as the ‘Best Director’, with the film’s lead Ali Zafar bagging a ‘Best Actor’ nominee.

Which brings us to Eman Suleman. The model/actress, who has been nominated as the ‘Best Emerging Talent’ in the Fashion category, put out a video on her social media where she expressed her discomfort in sharing her nomination with someone who has been accused of sexual harassment.

Instagram Photo

Eman didn’t say any names but it isn’t wrong to assume that she was talking about the Ali Zafar – Meesha Shafi controversy. She thanked the LSAs for the nomination but said that she feels, “no joy” in sharing the accolade with an “alleged harasser.” In all the reactions that have followed the nominations, Eman is the only person who has chosen to give up her nomination while most of the other people are merely seen expressing disappointment because they didn’t get nominated.

A brief look at the rest of the list

On the whole, the list of nominations is what it has always been – satisfying for those who are a part of it (and their fans) and dissatisfying for those who aren’t.

Social media is ripe with discussion on the nominations. Some people have called LSA out on Parwaz Hai Junoon not getting ‘Best Film’ nomination while Haseeb Hassan got nominated as the ‘Best Director’ for it.

Darr Si Jaati Hai Sila has been nominated in many categories but, unfortunately, there is no ‘Best Actress’ nomination for Yumna Zaidi who had quite wonderfully played the titular character Sila, a mentally disturbed victim of prolonged sexual and mental abuse. Farhan Saeed didn’t get any nomination for Suno Chanda when his performance in the show was on-par, if not better, with his nominated co-star Iqra Aziz. And interestingly enough, Mahira Khan and Maya Ali haven’t been nominated for their films either. This does come as quite a shock as both the represent the brand as Lux Girls.

LSAs is adamant on making sure that the nominations don’t exceed the number five. Then it goes on and removes the ‘Best Supporting Actor/Actress’ category so the nominations have become even more confusing now.

Cake bagged four nominations out of ten Best Actor/Actress category while Parwaz Hai Junoon didn’t get even one. Although it is great to see Bilal Abbas Khan and Sami Khan being appreciated as Best Actors (Drama) so it’s not all that bad, I guess.

In just two years, Lux Style Awards would be celebrating its 20th edition. It is just baffling that the biggest and the oldest award show of the country still continue to make snubs that could very easily be avoided. Despite being engulfed in the same controversy year after year, the LSAs does not stop making the same mistakes. Let’s just hope that 19th time is the charm, maybe?

Box Office: ‘Project Ghazi’ crashes over the weekend while ‘Sherdil’ and ‘Laal Kabootar’ hold well

Last weekend was expected to continue the good run for our local cinemas, in lieu of the two 22nd March releases; Sherdil and Laal Kabootar. This weekend saw the release of Project Ghazi as well and while the film had some potential (which was ruined by a total lack of good execution), it completely crashed over the weekend. The film opened with 30 lacs and did 25 and 20 lacs on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.

Project Ghazi

We, in our review, predicted that the film would not be appreciated much by the audiences and, (un)fortuantely, that is exactly what happened. The film failed on quite a number of levels. Although the star cast – Humayun Saeed and Syra Shehroz in particular – look good on the big screen, the script and direction fail them, for the most part.

It is important to realize that in these bad times for our cinemas, the content needs to be up there for the industry. Pakistani movies need to focus on their scripts more as any new ideas can fall flat on their face if not done well, and hopefully, this film will be a lesson for all. Unfortunately, Project Ghazi‘s survival chances are lost as the content has been rejected totally and this film will go down as a colossal failure.

Laal Kabootar

Laal Kabootar, on its 2nd weekend, has held itself well but it has sustained itself on lower levels, yet again. The film closed its 2nd weekend at around 55 lacs. The film will have to continue to do some good business in the coming weeks to stay afloat. The content is good but considering the number of shows it has, the business is not up to the mark. Nonetheless, Laal Kabootar has collected 1.66 crores approximately in nine days and is expected to hit the 2 crore mark in the coming weekdays.

Sherdil

Sherdil has managed good collections on the 2nd weekend too as the film collected 50 lacs on Friday and 75 lacs on Saturday. The film has crossed the 8 crore mark in ten days. The film is doing well for its self and the business in twin cities; Islamabad/Rawalpindi has been phenomenal, beating many foreign biggies. Sherdil has capitalized on the India-Pakistan conflict and the masses seemed to have enjoyed the content. The film seems to be on the course of being a good success at the box-office.

We cannot vouch for the authenticity of these box office numbers given by independent box office tracking site EPK Pakistan However, until we have some official box-office tracking system in Pakistan this is all we have got. The numbers are also revised at times and hence you may observe fluctuations.

Exclusive: ‘Captain Marvel’, ‘Dumbo’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame’ to release in Pakistan

We’ve got some good news, you all!

After a rather disappointing last few weeks for Marvel fans where Captain Marvel could not make its way to Pakistan, and the release of Avengers: Endgame also hanging up in the air, we have got some exciting news.

Release dates

As per our high placed sources, both these films will be coming to Pakistani cinemas. Avengers: Endgame will be releasing in Pakistan on April 26, 2019, coinciding with its worldwide release date, whereas Captain Marvel which already released worldwide on March 8, 2019, will be coming to Pakistan in two weeks time (ARE YOU EXCITED OR ARE YOU EXCITED?).

Dumbo follows suit

Furthermore, Walt Disney’s Dumbo which also could not make its way to Pakistan will be releasing in about two weeks too, alongside Captain Marvel. Censor for Captain Marvel and Dumbo is going to take place this week and once that is done, the films will be hitting the cinemas as soon as possible.

The reason for this delay in Disney Film’s Pakistan release was due to some monetary issues, where price negotiations proved to be a hindrance. However, now that it has been resolved, these films are coming to Pakistan as will all future Disney movies.

This news is definitely a huge win for cinemas owners who in absence of Bollywood were struggling to keep afloat. The footfalls were extremely low and major downsizing was also in progress where multiple screens were being shut down. But, last week’s release Sherdil did bring some hope, and now with these Hollywood releases, looks like the cinemas are back in business, and the audiences too will get to see the newest releases in theatres, soon.

“Looks like some actors are being paid to hype up the LUX Style Awards,” jokes Yasir Hussain

We did a rather detailed article on all the controversies the LUX Style awards 2019 nominations have brought with them, these past few days. From Mohsin Abbas Haider calling out the LSAs for blatantly ignoring his play Meri Guriya in all the drama related categories to Eman Suleman expressing her discomfort in sharing her nomination with someone who has been accused of sexual harassment (read Ali Zafar), the awards have been making headlines for the past few days now.

Amidst all the chaos, Yasir Hussain – of the KSL series fame – shared a rather funny notion on his Instagram story today. Here is what it said:

The curious beings that we are, we got in touch with Yasir Hussain to understand what he meant.

What Yasir himself had to say

“Even though I am relatively new to the industry, I have always known that there are no credible awards in the country. How come our old faces are realizing this just now? As long as they were being nominated, everything was fine and now that they no longer are, suddenly LSAs are not credible anymore,” said Yasir Hussain.

Even though Yasir didn’t exactly mention any names, we are assuming that these old faces may include names like Syed Jibran, Imran Abbas, etc. but again, we do not know for sure.

While further explaining the reasoning behind his joke, Yasir said, “the thing is there is always a lobby system when it comes to awards, in all parts of the world. For instance, the award shows hosted by some of our TV channels almost always give awards to people belonging to their lobby, the same goes for the LUX Style Awards as well. I don’t understand the hue and cry, this time around. This is how it has always been. That’s why I joked that it feels as if LUX is probably paying them to create all this hype. Hamesha awards par log tou naraz hote hee hain, 5 log nominate hotay hain, 15 naraz hotay hain. Everybody obviously likes their work and wants to be nominated. This happens every time, I don’t know what’s so special about this time.”

Although Yasir was definitely joking, we still think he has got a point. What do you think of the entire situation? Let us know in the comments.

Box Office: Looks like we may have to bid ‘Project Ghazi’ goodbye

22nd March saw the release of two local films; Sherdil and Laal Kabootar. In the week following that, another local release – Project Ghazi – hit the cinemas on the 29th of March. The films, combined, have brought some much-needed footfall to the cinemas. Sherdil, since its release, has earned over 8 crores despite all the mixed reviews it got. Laal Kabootar, on the other hand, has hit almost 2 crores. As for Project Ghazi, well, the film has crashed badly (as expected) and has been able to gather 85 lacs only.

Project Ghazi

Project Ghazi, as per our predictions, could not do well on the Box Office altogether. The film earned approximately 70 lacs on the opening weekend while it could only gather 10 lacs yesterday. The numbers are abysmal and are a living testimony to the fact that the content has been rejected by the audience through and through.

Here is the detailed breakdown:

Friday: 30 lacs

Saturday: 25 lacs

Sunday: 20 lacs

Monday: 10 lacs (rough estimates)

Total: 85 lacs

The film, beyond any doubt, has crashed and looks like keeping our fingers crossed hasn’t really helped.

Sherdil

The film has been a box office marvel since the beginning. After having a wonderful first week, the movie entered the second week with a rather decent hold.

The break-down for Sherdil’s approximate box office collection, until now, is as follows:

Week One: 6.05 crores

Week 2 Friday: 50 lacs

Week 2 Saturday: 75 lacs

Week 2 Sunday: 55 lacs

Week 2 Monday: 22 lacs (Rough Estimates)

Total: 8.07 crores

As the numbers indicate, the film’s numbers have witnessed a fall on Monday but that’s understandable given there is less audience on weekdays anyway. The film is expected to reach the 8.5 to 8.75 crore mark soon, depending on how well it holds. The coming weekend, we have another Hollywood movie DC Shazam releasing. It’d be interesting to see how Sherdil performs amidst all of this.

Laal Kabootar

As for Laal Kabootar, the film has been doing decent business, given it banks on a niche and doesn’t have mass appeal elements like its competitor Sherdil.

The break-down for its approximate box office collection, until now, is as follows:

Week One (includes premiere shows): 1.29 crores

2nd Friday: 15 lacs

2nd Saturday: 22 lacs

2nd Sunday: 19 Lacs

Week 2 Monday: 9 lacs

Total: 1.94 Crore

Just like Sherdil, Laal Kabootar has seen a decline in Monday’s numbers but the fall is only 40% as compared to its 2nd Friday, which is very normal. Since we have DC Shazam coming on the weekend, it would be important for Laal Kabootar to hold rather well on the weekend. Fingers crossed.

We cannot vouch for the authenticity of these box office numbers given by independent box office tracking site EPK Pakistan However, until we have some official box-office tracking system in Pakistan this is all we have got. The numbers are also revised at times and hence you may observe fluctuations.

We need to talk about the phenomenon that Imran Ashraf is, in ‘Inkaar’

$

0

With the first two episodes, being dry and rather stereotypical, Inkaar didn’t seem to get much attention. Directed by Kashif Nisar, the serial didn’t seem to be able to live up to the audience’s expectations, despite having a star-studded cast including Yumna Zaidi, Sami Khan, and Imran Ashraf. But as the serial has picked up the pace, it is surprisingly becoming everyone’s favorite.

The story revolves around Hajra (Yumna Zaidi), a socially active and confident girl, who suddenly becomes subdued and quiet. Shayan (Sami Khan) was Hajra’s colleague at the university who liked her but never confronted her with his feelings. After a few years, Shayan reveals his feelings, and also sends a marriage proposal to Hajra’s house, which she does accept after turning it down a few times.

The phenomenon that Imran Ashraf is

While Shayan and Hajra are played by exceptional actors, what piqued the audience’s interest was Rehaan Chaudhary played by Imran Ashraf. Lately, Imran Ashraf has been the talk of the town with his recent role in Ranjha Ranjha Kardi as “Bhola”. One of the most difficult roles to pull off, Imran did it rather exceptionally that made the audience laugh and cry with Bhola. While Imran won everyone’s hearts with Bhola, his character as Rehaan has made everybody hate him with the same intensity.

Rehaan Chaudhry is seen as the son of an influential political leader, who gets his way by using his status power. Seen as a full-of-himself-stud, Rehaan expresses his likeness towards Hajra, which she politely turns down. Trying to woo her, Rehaan uses every possible tactic from sending her expensive gifts, helping her father in his job and using his influential status to help Hajra get her deserved grades from a teacher who tries to harass her.

What caught the audience’s attention was Rehaan’s powerful aura, which oozed mystery and charm. Though this is not Imran’s first negative role, this is surely the one that is making people love and hate him at the same time. The way he charms Hajra is the kind every girl would swoon over, and on the contrary, the way he tries to take advantage of her makes him any girl’s worst nightmare.

Pulling Hajra into his web with his tactful charm, and then trying to take advantage of her when she is totally stupefied by it, has made the audience hate Rehaan Chaudhry with all their might. Imran Ashraf needs to be praised for the diversity and versatility that he so flawlessly handles. One of the brightest stars of our entertainment industry right now, this guy deserves all the praise he is getting and much much more. Maybe our movie directors should start casting him to make their movies work? Now there’s a thought.

What makes Azfar Jafri’s films the successes that they are?

$
0
0

Pakistani cinema, ever since its revival, has been on the lookout for good directors. Some have failed in the process while some have been successful. Of the latter, one of the most prominent names has been Azfar Jafri. Jafri has directed four films; Siyaah, Janaan, Parchi, and the recently released Sherdil Barring Siyaah which was a small indie film, all three of them have, fortunately, opened to an overwhelmingly good response at the box office and the two have gone on to be healthy success stories and looks like Sherdil is on its way there too.

Of good release dates and Bollywood bans

If we look at the first 10 days collections of the last three of Jafri’s releases, there are a number of interesting points to be discussed.

Janaan collected a total of 9.3 crores, Parchi amassed 6 crores and Sherdil has managed to gather 7.85 crores, in the first 10 days. Having said that, the most interesting thing to note here is their release dates. Janaan came out on Eid-ul-Azha and benefitted greatly as the holiday period gave the film’s collections a big boost. Sherdil came out last week, on the 23rd March weekend, which also gave it a good push.

As for Parchi, the film got the worst release time (of all three of them) as it came out in January which isn’t considered a great time for movies generally. However, it still did considerably well mainly because of its content and the Bollywood ban.

Moving on, if we look at all three of them individually; the aforementioned reasons, along with good content, were enough for all three of them to do well, with the Bollywood ban being a constant in all.

Of relatable content and good timing

Janaan was a family drama that talked about relationships and most importantly, the issue of child molestation. The film brought Bilal Ashraf, Ali Rehman and Armeena Khan to the limelight. It was an apt film for an Eid release as its family appealing content kept the viewers entertained. This film benefitted from the Eid holidays as mentioned earlier but got a rather long run at the box office due to the URI attacks leading to a ban on Bollywood content. The film released alongside Actor in Law and benefitted greatly from the audience overflow in the first few days.

Sherdil, on the other hand, is a patriotic film that cashes on the India – Pakistan animosity. This film seems to have benefitted considerably from the current situation, as India Pakistan are at loggerheads since Pulwama attacks. Furthermore, Sherdil may just have fulfilled the country lovers’ appetite by giving them a movie where Pakistan defeats India. Although the film hasn’t got countrywide acceptance, there are several factors that have worked in its favor namely; the huge number of shows it has got, masses’ appreciation, right release time and no major competition.

Parchi is a film which surprised many when it was released. The film had really good music, was promoted really well but it opened with many bad reviews. However, the audience was hungry for content at that time as Salman Khan’s blockbuster release Tiger Zinda Hai had gotten banned in Pakistan, and December’s local releases; Arth & Rangreza had been colossal disappointments. The fresh pairing of Ali Rehman and Hareem Farooq did the job and Parchi ended up being a success. Its run at the cinemas, however, was halted by Padmavat which released towards the end of January 2018.

In short, Azfar Jafri’s films were well-made with relatable content but he has always had his luck working for him too.

A final word

The three movies being discussed were released under the marketing strategies of ARY, which had done an excellent job for their promotion.

Moreover, for Janaan and Parchi, the cast and crew of the film were pretty accommodating and went out of their way with promotions and sort of started this new trend of micro-promotions which can best be explained in Imran Raza Kazmi’s own words who feels that the number of selfies and people they interact with directly result in more goodwill, meaning more people in the cinemas.

To sum it up, all three movies were well promoted, had good release dates and found the audiences’ acceptance and resultantly, did well in the first 10 days. We are hoping that Mr. Azfar Jafri’s next Eid-ul-Azha Heer Maan Ja release will also a mega success. Fingers crossed.

Test screenings in Pakistan: Five leading filmmakers weigh in with their opinions

$
0

According to the Hollywood producer Tim Bevan, (known for films such as Bridget Jones’s Diary, Darkest Hour, etc.), the goal of the film editing process is to turn a film into a story that makes people really go for it. 99.9 times out of 100, the audience speaks louder than anybody else & that’s what the test screening process does; it gives the audience an opportunity to speak their mind before the film goes out there.

In a fledgling industry like ours where the audiences are finally starting to take Pakistani cinema seriously, questions are being raised about the script, screenplay and other aspects of storytelling on the big screen, which is a manifestation of an increasing interest in the cinema (and honestly, we are here for it).

What is a test screening?

Before we delve deeper into this question, it is imperative to understand what a test screening is. A test screening is a preview screening of a movie or a TV show before its widespread release, to gauge the audience’s reaction. Preview audiences are selected from multiple sections of the population and are asked to complete a questionnaire or provide feedback in some other form.

The concept was introduced by Harold Lloyd who used it as early as 1928. Lollywood’s cousin Bollywood employs somewhat similar practices, albeit on a much lower scale than the cinema giant Hollywood.

Bollywood bigwig Amir Khan believes that the “test screening (of a film) gives a great deal of understanding on many aspects. When you make a film, you become so close to it, you lose your objectivity. During the test screening, when a rough cut is shared with a group of people who are not connected to the film business, their feedback brings in different perspectives.”

Amir embraced this process for Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988). Similarly, films like Love Aaj Kal employed the process too (where Imtiaz Ali had to, reluctantly, agree to a happy ending, against the one in which Deepika never marries Saif, just because the test audience argued against an unhappy ending). Raju Hirani, too, follows similar work template for his films.

The directors share their opinion:

Moving on, keeping in view the questions raised on our local films and the feasibility of test screenings as a possible solution, we got in touch with five leading filmmakers of the country who have films coming out later this year, for their take on the said issue. Here is what they had to say:

Wajahat Rauf

Wajahat Rauf (KSL series and Chhalawa) seemed rather aware of the practice when inquired about it.

He maintained that “the practice is prevalent all over the world. The test audience is selected carefully from various walks of life, based on their demographics, income, etc. We don’t employ the practice locally for our films because people think it’s not necessary which is wrong. If a test audience of ten people thinks that the film or its ending is a drag, then there is definitely a problem with the film that needs to be addressed. I am sure it will eventually come to Pakistan, with forward-thinkers embracing it.”

“I do this for my films (although not in a strict way) by showing them to people with different opinions and backgrounds, in order to break into a middle ground. Regardless, the practice will and should come to Pakistan,” continued Wajahat Rauf.

Azfar Jaffri

Zara SheikhAzfar Jafri (Janaan, Parchi , Shedil, and Heer Maan Ja) maintained a similar view, claiming that his camp does run a test screening (but again, involving people who are known to him) to get a feeler before they release the film.

“At this level, however, a proper screen test involving people – with an idea of what the masses want to see – seems unattainable (though obviously desirable),” said Azfar Jafri.

Yasir Nawaz

Wrong No. 2 release dateYasir Nawaz’s Mehrunisa V Lub U is a prime example of a film where the audience didn’t connect with the content at all, despite it revolving around the social issue of pollution. The screenplay was unnecessarily dragged at various points and by the end, the audience had totally lost their interest.

We, therefore, talked to Yasir about the practice and he had the following to say: “We do have this practice for our dramas but not for our films.”

The director, furthermore, confessed to having no knowledge of the process in Hollywood or Bollywood. He, however, also pointed out the inevitable production costs that test screening could bring with itself but like the rest of the directors we talked to, he was all in favor of them.

Bilal Lashari

The Legend of Maula Jatt release China

Bilal Lashari (Waar and The Legend of Maula Jatt) maintains that “there is a reason as to why test screenings are happening all over the world and if feasible, Pakistani cinema should also embrace it. It’s only after a big test screening that you get to understand the collective experience of your audience. When you are watching a film with a bigger crowd, it helps you understand which parts need to be edited to make them more interesting or smooth. Of course, it’s a difficult process logistically, especially in Pakistan, where films are given final touches until hours before their releases. As for Maula Jatt, we are considering (and may go) for a test screening for the international audience, to gauge their connection and acceptability for a Punjabi film.”

Asim Raza

paray hut love BTSAsim Raza, whose film Ho Mann Jahan, despite being a hit, contained a rather poorly conceived yet crucial sequence where Adeel’s character falls on a small coffee table, in an emotional overdrive and lands in the ICU. The said scene raised a number of questions for it could have been replaced with a car accident or something similar, had it gone through a test screening.

While talking to GL, Asim, however, didn’t seem very excited about the whole concept of test screenings, even though he called it a “great idea.” He seemed skeptical of the people who will do the job. To put in his own words, “like any other field of Arts & Sciences, film and its multiple genres need to be understood by qualified experts. As an audience, everyone has a right to liked or dislike a film but giving them the authority to give inputs on the technicalities of how the film could have been improved or ‘salvaged’; for that, I feel they should be able to prove their authority on the craft first, in order to qualify as a ‘doctor’.”

A final word

From what we see, the leading directors of the country are pretty much accepting of the idea, however, the feasibility of the process has to be kept in mind from the production perspective as well. Moreover, globally, while many a time, the test audience improved the film, it, sometimes, damaged them too. In still others, it barely made a scratch.

A bad score on the test screening may not always translate into a film’s failure. The success of Dirty Dancing, for instance, surprised the cast as well its makers for it scored so badly with the test audiences, the producers almost made it a straight to video release.

The test audiences found the sexually suggestive dancing “uncomfortable.” The writer Eleanor Bergstein, however, refused any edits and the movie was released as is. Although the makers were sure that the film would be a flop, it was a smashing success.

Similarly, Martin Scorsese’s Goodfellasdespite being Warner Brothers’ most poorly tested film, went on to be successful anyway.

Having said that, the test screening of films may not be the remedy of all the ailments the local cinema is suffering from, but it definitely could be a potent adjuvant to whatever treatment is being offered already. Local cinema should definitely give it a try where and whenever feasible.

Y’all know who Mahira Khan is. The QUEEN needs no introduction, whatsoever. So moving on, every now and then, Mahira gives her fans an opportunity to ask her questions through her Twitter account. Last night, Mahira held a candid, question-answer session, hashtagged (a term we just coined at GL) at #AskMahira, which had some very interesting responses.

Here is a summary of it all, for your convenience:

To start off, fans were bombarded with tons of love from Mahira. Here are a few exhibits:

Exhibit A

Exhibit B

Exhibit C

ISN’T SHE ADORABLE?

The bottom line is, there was lots and lots of love from the Queen. She didn’t hesitate in letting it all out (we are sorry, we are just a little obsessed with her right now).

Please know that these are just a few exhibits. There were tons of other tweets that resembled the ones we have shared above. Moving on, a fan even got asked on a date from Mahira and she could not hold her excitement. I mean, can you honestly blame her?

There were obviously talks of her upcoming films The Legend of Maula Jatt and Superstar. Looks like Mahira sure has her eyes on the best attire from The Legend of Maula Jatt.

We also loved how she describes Mukkho as ‘Pattakha’.

Amidst all of this, Mahira did not forget to talk highly of her co-stars.

Mahira further revealed that she has shot two songs for Superstar and honestly, we can’t wait to watch Mahira groove on-screen.

Of course, there were talks about food too.

Looks like Mahira’s love for food knows no bounds.

Be it roaming in Sindh for shoots or speaking Punjabi, Mahira has done it all.

ALSO WAIT WHAT, Mahira is going to wear the director’s cap soon???

And lastly, everyone wanted to know the story behind the selfie that broke the internet yesterday night and Mahira was kind enough to reveal a few things about it.

Whatever we say about social media ruining our youth’s lives, it is lovely to see how the same social media gives fans a chance to connect with their favourite celebrities, every now and then. We at, Galaxy Lollywood, are already eagerly awaiting the next #AskMahira session.

Box Office: ‘JPNA 2’ hits the 70 crore mark!

Jawani Phir Nahi Ani 2, more commonly known as JPNA 2, is a Pakistani romantic comedy film which was released last year, in 2018. The film is a joint venture of Salman Iqbal Films, Humayun Saeed and Shahzad Nasib’s Six Sigma Plus, and Jerjees Seja’s ARY Films (lots of big names, we know). The film is directed by Nadeem Baig and is a sequel to the 2015 film Jawani Phir Nahi Ani. It stars an ensemble cast comprising Humayun Saeed, Fahad Mustafa, Ahmed Ali Butt, Vasay Chaudhry, Kubra Khan, Mawra Hocane, etc. The film released on Eid ul-Adha on 22 August 2018. All the aforementioned facts point to a clear blockbuster and well, looks like that’s exactly what has happened.

Some background on the last year’s numbers

The film’s budget was 11 crores which is, frankly, quite a lot, given the usual numbers in Pakistan. However, JPNA 2 did not disappoint and ended its run, about ten weeks later, with record-breaking numbers. For the total gross, JPNA 2 crossed ₨ 68 crores out of which 51 crores was locally while 17 crore was from the international markets.

However, the film was re-released almost a month and a half back owing to the blanket ban on Bollywood content in the cinemas (they needed footfall so the re-runs are quite understandable). Today, it was announced that the film has now officially Pakistan’s highest grossing film with global box office business of 70 crores which honestly, is quite a feat. Parwaz Hai Junoon was also released for a re-run at almost the same time but JPNA 2 has clearly stood out with its numbers.

The news was announced by ARY CEO, Jerjees Seja, on his Instagram. The caption read,  “News alert! The biggest blockbuster of all time #JPNA2 becomes the first ever Pakistani movie to cross Rs.70 Crores at the Global box office!”

Recently, Ali Zafar’s Teefa In Trouble hit the 50 crore mark too and honestly, we cannot be happier for our local cinema.

Humayun Saeed – Nadeem Baig duo

Such remarkable numbers are living testimony to the fact that the Humayun Saeed and Nadeem Baig duo can prove to be the real winners at the Box Office. We are going to call them the ‘blockbuster duo’ from now on and predict that their upcoming movies will be super successful at the Box Office.

Moreover, after the sinking ship that Humayun’s recent film Project Ghazi has become, this comes as good news for Humayun Saeed’s fans (the guy has still got it). Looks like the audiences still want to see Humayun’s films, it’s just that they will no longer tolerate subpar content. Another important thing to take into consideration here is that The Legend of Maula Jatt is all set to release this coming Eid and it would be interesting to see if the Bilal Lashari – Fawad Khan duo can compete with the Humayun Saeed – Nadeem Baig duo. We are just going to keep our fingers crossed.

Films this Friday (April 5, 2019): Four films for you this weekend

It seems like our cinema industry will finally be seeing a good weekend in 2019, since the ban on Indian movies. The 23rd March weekend provided some relief to the same, with two local releases; Sherdil and Laal Kabootar, for otherwise, the business has been quite low. This week, Disney is back in the local market with the mega release of Captain Marvel. Alongside Captain Marvel, two other English films are being released that include DC Shazam and one horror film Pet Sematary.

Captain Marvel

Captain Marvel is finally releasing in Pakistan after a lot of disagreements and heartbreaks. The film does not need any synopsis as all Marvel fans are aware that the Avengers: Infinity War end credit scene had Captain Marvel coming to their rescue. The film will be the final follow up to Avengers: Endgame.

GL Says: Captain Marvel has done phenomenal business all over the globe as the film, just a few days back, crossed 1 billion at the box office worldwide.

The film has the ability to do a good, healthy weekend at the box office but the one month delayed release will definitely affect its business. The numbers still will be on a higher side and the film will enjoy a fruitful run until the Endgame comes out in cinemas. Cine-goers have been waiting for this movie for a long time and we believe that the business will be quite good in the multiplexes.

DC Shazam

Shazam is about a youngster who becomes a bubble snapping superhero when someone says the magic word. This film comes under the DC universe and will be a good addition for people to watch in the cinemas. The film, from its pre-screenings, has exhibited good reports which will definitely enhance its chances at the box-office.

GL Says: Shazam will find its audience in the multiplexes and among a certain section of the audience who knows the character. It will definitely not have the same pull as of a Marvel superhero film but still will attract some audience. The film, with good collections overseas, can bring in considerable footfalls in the coming weeks, as the next two weeks have no major releases.

Pet Sematary

Pet Sematary, follows a family who, upon moving to rural Maine, discovers that their new home is located near a mysterious burial ground that sets off a chain of horrific events. Pet Sematary is mostly a non-starrer which will hamper its chances.

GL Says: Pet Sematary, being a horror film will find some audience among the horror lovers but the number will be very limited. A brilliant film like the US has only managed average collections at our local box office so Pet will find it tougher to succeed.

Sohni Mahiwal

Less than a week back, Meera Jee shared the Sohni Mahiwal poster on Instagram and stunned everyone for the film has literally come out of nowhere. Her post revealed that the film comes out soon, like tomorrow soon. However, we have seen no promotions, no nothing and we don’t know what to make of that.

According to media reports, the love story, which was shot some time back got delayed due to work schedule clash. It looks like it is finally coming out tomorrow.

GL Says: We honestly don’t know what to say here for we are not even sure if the movie is actually coming out tomorrow, given how it has been given the step-sister treatment. We won’t believe anything until we actually see it in the cinemas. Even if it comes out, we don’t predict good numbers and you all know why.

Hopefully, Captain Marvel and Shazam will bring lots of joy to the cinemas and as for y’all, see you at the movies.

The curious case of Meera Jee’s ‘Sohni MahiWal’

$

Meera Jee is the queen of our hearts, always has been and will continue to be one, as long as we live. She is unapologetically herself and that’s exactly what we love the most about her. Having said that, sometimes Meera Jee says and does things that make absolutely no sense but that doesn’t reduce our love for her. They, however, need to be brought to the forefront because hey, we are a film blog and we just have to report on all things Meera Jee (read Lollywood).

Less than a week back, something happened. Our beloved Meera Jee shared a poster of Sohni MahiWal on her Instagram. Everyone was stunned because hello, the movie came out of nowhere. According to the poster, the movie was supposed to come out today (which is weird, we know and what’s even weirder is that it didn’t even come out today).

Imagine this; a star announces the arrival of their movie just 5ish days before its release, takes no part in its promotions – there weren’t any promotions, to begin with – deletes the arrival post from their social media just when the movie is about to release and kinda sorta also disappears, how does that even work?!?

Mehnaz Moammar Rana and Meera Jee’s take on the issue

Anyway, after we shared a piece announcing Sohi MahiWal’s release, last night, we were contacted by Moammar Rana’s wife – Mehnaz Pervaiz – (he is starring opposite Meera Jee in the same film) and she revealed the following: “The film was shot 15 years ago and then it was shelved because the producers did not have money to pay the stars. Please be aware of them as it looks like they want cheap publicity. The prints are held until he pays the remaining amount.”

We also contacted Meera Jee and found out that she is currently in Dubai. It was told that the whole cast including herself, Moammar Rana, etc. and people behind the film will sit down sometime this week to decide what to do about it. As we said yesterday, we won’t believe anything until we actually see it in the cinemas (and we still stand by it). Regardless, let’s keep our fingers crossed because hey, why wouldn’t we want another Meera film, that too from 15 years ago. Let’s wait and see how the situation unfolds.

Box Office: ‘Project Ghazi’ off most screens as Hollywood strikes theaters

22nd March witnessed the release of two local films; Sherdil and Laal Kabootar. In the week following that, we had Project Ghazi come out (and go). While the first two have been helpful in bringing some footfall to our cinemas, the latter has, unfortunately, played little to no role in that. Here is how the three films fared at the box office, last week.

Project Ghazi

Unfortunately, the film is already off most screens since it has not been doing the business one would expect a Humayun Saeed starrer to do. On the bright side though, the film has somehow managed to hit the 1 crore mark by the end of its first week. The total number is around 1.1 crores and it is predicted that it probably won’t be able to cross 1.25 crores. With films like Captain Marvel, DC Shazam, etc. hitting the screens this weekend, the Project Ghazi run is, most likely, at its final stages. It is expected to see a massive drop this weekend and we are probably not going to keep our fingers crossed this time.

Laal Kabootar

Just like Project Ghazi, Laal Kabootar is also expected to see a fall in numbers on account of the two mega Hollywood releases hitting the cinemas, this weekend. Having said that, it closed its second week yesterday and while there has definitely been a fall, it is rather decent.

The complete breakdown is as follows:

Week 1: 1.29 crores

Week 2: 82 lacs

Total: 2.11 crores

If the film had earned a little more in its first week, it could have touched 4 crores but looks like, it may just be able to reach 3 crores anyway. Fingers crossed (yahan banta hai!)

Sherdil

Sherdil has been a true box office winner, through and through. It had a spectacular first week and while there is definitely a considerable drop in the second week, it is still more than what the other two local films have been able to make in their last week.

The complete breakdown is as follows:

Week One: 6.05 crores

Week Two: 2.66 crores (approximately)

Total: 8.71 crores (approximately)

Sherdil will, most likely, see a drop this weekend too because hello, Hollywood but looks like it may still be able to sustain itself for some more time. Let’s wait and see how the Box Office situation unfolds itself in the coming week.

These box office numbers are given by an independent box office tracking site EPK Pakistan.

Shamoon Abbasi to take his web-series ‘Mind Games’ to Netflix and his film ‘Durj’ to Cannes

The year 2019 may have started a little rough for Shamoon Abbasi with the whole debacle that happened with the film Gumm. However, with the news of the latest developments regarding his two upcoming projects, it is safe to say that those days of being frustrated over how Gumm shaped up to be are history. With Shamoon’s upcoming web-series Mind-Games getting a deal from Netflix and his movie Durj on the way of being screened at Cannes, this abundantly talented actor is going to uncharted places that the other Pakistani projects haven’t gone yet.

Galaxy Lollywood reached out to Shamoon Abbasi and got exclusive news about these two projects.

Mind Games may find a home at Netflix

Web-series are becoming the new norm in the Pakistani industry (that news is old). But there hasn’t been a single announced web-series that has managed to penetrate the giant digital platform Netflix. Until now, that is. There is a very strong possibility that Shamoon Abbasi’s upcoming web-series titled Mind Games has been locked in by Netflix to be its exclusive digital platform.

Speaking to us about the project, Shamoon revealed that he had been approached for it with the idea that Netflix was interested in the project. “Netflix Canada has shown interest in the project; they like the storyline, it has been approved. Right now, they are just waiting for the finished product. There’s a 90% chance that it will go on Netflix and we are in conversation with them right now so, fingers crossed. I cannot give a definite statement but that is how I had been approached for the project.”

The association with Netflix really gives the impression that the story for Mind Games promises to be different. It definitely caught our interest and we asked Shamoon to share some details about the story of the show and specifically, what drew him towards it.

“The director, Farhan Tajjamul, contacted me from Canada and told me the show’s plot. Basically, it is a thriller. And that is what I liked about it in the first place as I am a fan of the genre. I knew that it would be an energetic project.”

He further talked about the show having a storyline that is based on the global reality of certain hidden agencies sometimes using models to carry out money-laundering. The show has taken a few dramatic liberties to make a fictionalized version of this dark reality.

“We are not going in the nitty-gritty of how these things are being done because we don’t want to introduce the money laundering part. It is more about how things can go bad with certain girls agreeing to take part in these activities, anywhere in the world. There are lots of girls who are caught laundering money and contrabands, things that are banned in certain parts of the world. There are other storylines in the show as well. But for me, I could see myself being part of this particular storyline.”

Written by Inam Shah, this Picture Wala Productions project also includes names like Sana Fakhar, Emad Irfani, and Kanza Razzaq in the list of cast.

Durj may go the Cannes way

Be it about its unique storyline that deals with cannibalism in Pakistan or its lead actress, Sherry Shah, going through a dramatic transformation for her role, Durj has managed to create headlines multiple times before. And this time it has come in news again with something even bigger. Shamoon Abbasi is taking its directorial debut to one of the most famous international film festivals – Cannes Film Festival.

“We had sent Durj to Cannes a few months back,” Shamoon stated. “There are different phases of the Film Festival and MaShaAllah, Durj has entered the first phase. It is going to be screened and previewed at the Director’s Fortnight section of Cannes Film Festival.”

The Director’s Fortnight is a parallel section of the Cannes Film Festival that is held by Société des réalisateurs de films. He explained that with the way things work in Cannes, films get previewed at multiple places before eventually being shown at the main festival; Durj is the first phase of the entire process. Shamoon was hopeful for the film getting to compete in Cannes eventually.

As for the film’s release in Pakistan, Shamoon only said that the official announcement will be made very soon. “We are planning on announcing the release dates across all social media platforms very soon with a poster and, most probably, with a new trailer.”

This kind of representation for Pakistani content on a huge international and global platform is definitely huge, positive news for the Pakistani entertainment industry. We wish Shamoon and the entire teams of Mind Games and Durj all the very best and success for their endeavors.

Looks like a sequel to ‘Teefa in Trouble’ may just be around the corner

Yes, you read that right!

Pakistan’s biggest non-holiday grosser of all times, Teefa In Trouble, is getting a sequel. The multi-talented Ali Zafar has recently announced the sequel to the same, in what came as a rather surprising move.

Teefa in Trouble hitting the 50 crore mark

Just a few days back, we reported on Teefa hitting the 50 crore mark.

Teefa in Trouble, during its original run, collected a total of 34.5 crores locally and 14 crores from the overseas, taking its total to 48.5 crores approximately.

Since the ban on Indian content, that was imposed in February, many local films were brought back in the cinemas; Teefa being one of them. On March 31, Ali Zafar announced on his social media accounts that the film has amassed a total of 50 crores worldwide on the revived run. This shows that the film, despite releasing online, could still add 2.5 crores more to its tally.

Teefa in Trouble 2 in the works

As for the sequel, it all happened at a star-studded event by IFLIX, to celebrate the success of Teefa in Trouble, at a café in Karachi. A large number of celebrities including Humayun Saeed, Fiza Ali Meerza, Nabeel Qureshi, Shehzad Sheikh, Yasir Nawaz, Sonya Hussain, Nadeem Mandviwalla, along with many others, attended the event.

Ali Zafar, while talking at the event, asked his best friend and director Ahsan Rahim, “Let’s do Teefa in Trouble 2?”, to which Ahsan responded, “Yes Ali, let’s do it.”

While many thought the announcement may just be a suggestion and nothing substantial, we got in touch with Ali Zafar and his team ourselves to see if there is any truth to it.

Ali Zafar confirmed the sequel to the 2018 blockbuster to be in works. To put it in his own words, “With all the love and accolades showered upon us with this venture, I deem it unfair to keep the fans waiting too long for Teefa to come back to the big screen. I think it is time for some more ass kicking!”

Moreover, Ahsan Rahim, the man behind the film, said the following at the same event, “Ali just couldn’t stop himself from sharing this, we have been discussing a sequel but now that he’s announced it, he’ll have to write it!”

Have we been getting clues all along?

Industry insiders and diehard fans of Teefa have always been hopeful of a possible sequel to the same. The end credits of the film were followed by a scene (not seen by many) where Nayyar Ijaz’s character is shown to kill an annoying mosquito in a revengeful way. It was only a matter of time that the sequel’s news was made official and with Ali doing that in the excitement of the moment at the IFLIX event, our wishes already seem to be granted.

Moving on, Ali Zafar, in one of his interviews, had also stated that his next film may be in cinemas by 2020 and we predict that Teefa in Trouble 2 may be just that film.

Teefa in Trouble despite having released in adverse circumstances – election week and non-Eid holiday weekend – became Pakistan’s first non-holiday film that completed the 50 crore run. It was also the first non-Indian film that was distributed internationally by the Prestigious Yash Raj Films. The film also holds the record of the highest number of hits on youtube for any Pakistani film, with almost 33 million collective hits on its songs.

We wish the best of luck to Ali Zafar and his team, let’s wait and see how the situation unfolds.

The good, the bad and the ugly: It’s time we talked about the Pakistani live theater

$
0
0

Just like movies and television, live theatre has been a source of entertainment all around the world, including Pakistan. While cinema has been the nation’s first priority, live theatre has always retained its viewership as an equally good source of entertainment. As an Islamic state, initially, political plays and plays raising social awareness were largely performed, which posed an obstacle when it came to the progress of performing arts in the country.

With the passage of time and the increase of education and liberation in the country, we started venturing into many different genres. One such name that changed theatre in Pakistan was Manto, whose writings are still remembered to date. Today, not only have our plays advanced but are also now being performed internationally in our national language i.e Urdu.

Stumbling blocks for the Pakistani live theatre

While we have superb theatrical actors, there are still a lot of things that are stumbling blocks when it comes to Pakistani live theatre. Though we have exceptional writers and actors (Ahad Raza Mir, Sanam Saeed, Sarwat Gilani, Yasir Hussain, etc. being a few of them), it is the infrastructure that becomes an obstruction in the advancement of our theatre.

Another issue would be the subpar marketing of quality live theatre, which becomes another hindrance for the plays’ progression. Low wages of the actors performing in the plays, make them switch to the television industry and that further adds to the problem.

What theatre actors have to say about it

Talking about the modern theatre, we have many famous names that can be mentioned here, one of them being the multi-talented, Yasir Hussain.

A down-to-earth personality and an exceptional actor, he has been in theatre for the last 16 years. Working with the marvelous Anwar Maqsood, his plays are an excellent representation of good quality theatre in Pakistan nowadays; his recent being Naach Na Jaane. When asked about his theatrical experience in Pakistan, he said, “There are many people who have worked in theatre such as Hamza Ali Abbasi, Hareem Farooq, Urwa Hocane, (etc.) but they are not continuing it because theatre requires time and the income is low, which is why they have switched to television.”

Yasir Hussain theatre Naach Na Jaanay

Yasir further added that “I couldn’t do television, which is why I’m doing theatre and I enjoy it more.” He also mentioned that the lack of infrastructure, lighting, backstage and the lack of quality theatres with good acoustics are a major setback. “We only have performable theaters in Lahore, Karachi, and Islamabad, but none for multidimensional theatre. We cannot make quality plays without good theatres”.

Another exceptional actor would be the very famous Ahad Raza Mir, who recently worked in a Canadian play “Hamlet”, and was highly appreciated for it. In an interview with SomethingHaute, Ahad said “Theatre is what got me started. It’s a must to explore different avenues of performance in Pakistan. The theatre here is good, it’s getting there, but I think it’s time to open up that world a bit more”.

A final word

Low-quality commercial theatre in Pakistan, with low ticket prices, have also played a big role in the regression of theatre. Increasing vulgarity and obscenity in these commercial plays have put in a bad name for theatre in the minds of the Pakistani audience. Not only should these be regulated by the government, but the infrastructure of the theaters should be refined too, to promote good quality live theatre.

In today’s modern era, where nearly every aspect of human life has been taken over by machines and technology, live theatre is something that will always give one a breath of fresh air. Where cinema and television are progressing in quality and performance by leaps and bounds, live theatre is something that portrays raw emotions that can’t be seen on screens. Therefore, it is something that now needs to be promoted further, for children as well as adults.

Project Ghazi’s failure: What does it mean for the lead cast?

$
0
0

Pakistan’s first superhero flick – Project Ghazi – finally saw its much awaited and delayed release in the last week of March. The film’s (un)fateful journey, however, ended with an expected (and a sad) debacle.

The film has raked around 1.5 crores which is even less than a low budget film like Laal Kabootar. It, undoubtedly, implies that megastars and big budgets never guarantee a film’s success. Instead, it all comes down to how well a film is made and how much emphasis is given to vital aspects such as the story, screenplay, direction, and editing.

While much has been written about what went wrong and what could have saved this potentially good film, we analyze what the failure of Project Ghazi could mean for its lead cast.

Humayun Saeed

Project Ghazi is only the third flop in the rather lustrous career of the Pakistani box office king – Humayun Saeed.

The actor who started his film journey with  Samina Peerzada’s blockbuster directorial Debut Inteha opposite Meera has only two other films on his résumé that were declared flop at the box office – namely No Paisa No problem and Khulay Aasman Ke Neechay. Whereas Javed Fazil’s Mein Ik Din Laut Ke Aaunga, which saw Indian TV stars in the lead, managed to be an average grosser.

Furthermore, albeit the multi-starer Yalgaar met mixed to negative reviews, it still managed to do a decent business. Post-revival, however, PG is the first flop in Saeed’s career. The film has registered the lowest numbers for a Humayun Saeed film since 2010, by a huge margin.

Project Ghazi‘s failure could hardly mean anything for a star like Humayun, who has not only has proved himself as an actor in films like Main Hoon Shahid Afridi, Punjab Nahi Jaungi, Jawani Phir Nahi Ani series, etc., he is also amongst the most successful producers of the nascent film industry. It is also important to keep it in mind that the masses hardly even knew of PG because it wasn’t promoted at bigger levels. The primary goal of PG’s makers was to ensure that the film gets a cinematic release and not the attention of masses, the lack of which translates to hardly any negative impact on Humayun’s image that he carries amongst the same.

Although 2019  may not see any other Humayun release, with films like Love You Jatta and Loafer in the making, the star definitely is going to be a (usual) success roll.

Sheheryar Munawar

Sheheryar Munawar could be dubbed as a smaller mirror image of Humayun as he, just like him, is both an actor and a producer and is pretty popular for his good looks and not so bad acting skills (something Humayun was known for, in the start of his career in the 90s).

Shehryar has earlier proved himself both as an actor and a producer with his debut Ho Mann Jahaan. Similarly, he did considerably well as an actor in 7 Din Mohabbat In but the film, too, was an average grosser on the box office. It could only earn 13 crores which honestly, is quite low for a film with a 10 crore budget and big names like Mahira Khan and Sheheryar himself.

As for Project Ghazi, despite everything, he appeared to have prepared the most extensively for his role in the same. Unsurprisingly and ironically, he (alongside Syra Shahroz) is also the one, who got (the most) affected by the film’s delay and its subsequent failure.

There is no doubt about the talent Sheheryar possesses and his imminent bright future, however, with a flop like Project Ghazi and not much of a strong film record, the actor will definitely be required to deliver with his only release for 2019 – Parey Hut Love.

Will Shehryar manage to parey failure with his next is something only time will tell but we, at GL, do wish him a roaring success in future.

Syra Shahroz

In a small industry like ours, there is no dearth of artists who are underexposed and underrated; a) because of the meager quality work they are assigned and b) because of the lack of any sort of work at all. The curse is common in all smaller industries, across the globe. Just a few days ago, the Oscar-winner Spanish actor (No Country for Old Men), Javier Bardem, was reported to have found struggling to find work in Spain.

Syra Shehroz is just one of those artists. If she doesn’t face any difficulty in finding acting jobs, we are sure she definitely has difficulty in finding a good team that ensures success on screens. She has a beautiful face, can act and dance but has yet to hit the success and acclaim at a mass level, on the film front.

She was appreciated for her acting in both of her films Chalay Thay Saath and Project Ghazi but unfortunately, the failure of both films doesn’t present a good sign for the actor, at least in cinema.

The only film project that she now appears to have in the pipeline is a romcom opposite hubby Shehroz Sabzwari. Not much people know when the film is going to come out. We,  however, do wish that Syra sees the success she deserved with her third film because not a lot of people are as lucky as Uncle Javed Sheikh who was continued to be cast as a hero in many films despite seeing back to back flops in the start of his career in the 80s.

For now, we can only wish her all the success on the cinematic front and hope for the best.

There is much that ARY is doing right that the other channels aren’t – that is something we have covered already. The channel seems to have struck gold with its choice of content and marketing skills as it keeps churning out one hit after the other. The latest ARY presentation that has the audience enthralled and glued to the screens is the Hira Mani-Affan Waheed starer Do Bol.

Following ARY’s strategy of airing double episodes for some of its major prime-time dramas, Do Bol has managed to form a very loyal fanbase in merely a month of its running. The double episodes ensure the drama’s pace is faster, the filler bits don’t bother much because the approximately 80 minutes of runtime makes sure the plot keeps developing; put simply, the double episodes have made audience get attached to the drama and the characters in half the time than it would’ve done had it followed the conventional one-episode-per-week format.

However, ab Do Bol banenge chaar as not two, but four episodes of the drama will air on ARY, starting this week.

What could the reason be?

It is not a new thing for ARY to switch up the days and slot of its dramas while the dramas are airing. A drama would initially start airing on one slot, and then after a few episodes, the promos for it airing on another timeslot and day would appear out of nowhere. Sometimes, the episodes wouldn’t air, to begin with, and the audience would be left confused. Last year’s Sami Khan-Madiha Imam starer drama Wo Mera Dil Tha was a victim of both these things.

But then, there have been cases where the dramas which started with the normal one-episode-per-week format would start airing twice a week. Dramas like Aangan (the contemporary, realistic, LSA nominated one) and Pukaar had started to air twice a week for a few weeks. But just like how they started airing twice a week without any warning, they reverted back to the normal schedule in the same manner.

It seems that ARY treats its dramas schedules depending on how well the dramas are doing rating wise. And it could also be because the channel does not have slots to fill with new dramas so it ends up giving more air time to already established dramas. The decision of doubling the double episodes of Do Bol does make these two reasons the most plausible ones. However, one can’t overlook the fact that in a time when the dramas get stretched at the first sign of success, these double double-episodes can cause some harm to the producer and the channel financially.

What the producer herself has to say

We reached out to Sana Shahnawaz, producer of Do Bol, to get her point of view on these recent developments. She sounded quite happy with the decision.

“As a producer, I believe in my project,” Sana started. “When the channel contacted me and told me they wanted to give Do Bol one more day of the week to run its double-episodes, I was very happy. The drama is very popular and people are liking it very much. If the channel is keen on so much air-time for my drama, it means it is working well with the audience.”

The drama’s popularity isn’t the only reason. With Ramazan barely a month away, and ARY dedicating the month to its roza transmissions followed by the post-roza Jeeto Pakistan program that runs for the entire month of Ramazan, Sana wanted her drama to wrap up neatly before it.

“The game show transmissions have no fixed timings. The audience wouldn’t feel up to watching a 2+ hour long game show and then sit down to watch two episodes of Do Bol. So, it is better that the drama wraps up before that situation arises. The channel would’ve never come to this decision had the drama not being doing extremely well. So, this decision has all the parties pleased.”

Well, ARY’s flexible airing schedule for its shows might not work well for all dramas but Do Bol is definitely benefitting from it. Considering how the audience is also excited at the prospect of getting even more content to consume of their favorite show, ARY seems to be hitting many nails in one stroke. Of course, some section of the audience might be complaining but it’s the era of binge-watching anyway. Even on a temporary basis, I feel it’s actually good that ARY is slowly introducing the concept of binge-watching to the Pakistani audience by throwing four episodes at a time at them to catch up with. And of course, it also means that the dramas would end early as well and that is a concept that the drama industry really needs to re-adapt to.

Box Office: ‘Captain Marvel’ brings in some respite to our rather empty cinemas

Last weekend saw two big Hollywood releases; Captain Marvel and DC Shazam. At this point in time, most of us are aware that our cinemas have been struggling with low footfalls, for quite some time now. Cherry on top, Indian content has not been coming to Pakistan since February. These two, however, have been able to bring in some respite but in limited multiplexes. Let’s see what the numbers say:

Captain Marvel

Captain Marvel opened to good collections over the weekend, with a total of 2.5 crores. The film, due to being the last follow up to Avengers: Endgame had a lot of hype going for it. Keeping in view the 4-week delay, these collections are definitely good but could have been better had it been released on time.

Moreover, the film has been in news due to its rather controversial delay, so that helped its cause too. Its numbers, however, have fallen by 63% on Monday which is high. The film was only able to gather 30 lacs on Monday; the collections are a manifestation of the fact that the film will struggle and may go the DVD way soon.

Sherdil

Sherdil, has continued to march on with good collections overall as it has done a total of 9.5 crores in 17 days, with the 3rd-weekend collections amounting to 80 lacs in total. Sherdil has really found a good audience in selected areas as it has continued to do well in those especially the mass centers & a few multiplexes. The film looks like, will have another good week and until the release of Avengers, will be able to amass a good total.

Here is the complete breakdown of numbers:

Week 1: 6.05 Crores

Week 2: 2.65 Crores (approx)

Third Weekend: 80 lacs (approx)

Total: 9.5 crores

Laal Kabootar

Laal Kabootar has been doing collections at lower levels ever since it came out. As far as its total collections are concerned, it has done a mere 2.41 crores with the 3rd weekend total being 30 lacs. The film has struggled considering the huge number of shows it was allotted and also given all the raving reviews it has gotten. The film could have done better but it has been struggling for some time now and looks like, it will not emerge as a success.

Here is the complete breakdown of numbers:

Week 1: 1.29 Crores

Week 2: 82 lacs

Third Weekend: 30 lacs

Total: 2.41 crores

A final word

Lastly, Avengers: Endgame is all set to bring in good collections at the box office with there being some crazy advance bookings happening for the film, 20 days before its release. Having said that, as long as the Indian content does not come back, it looks like our cinemas will suffer and this is the reality we all have to face. This pattern of success in breaks is not enough for the money that is on stake so it’s about time that the industry came together to find a solution for this issue. Otherwise, this tough situation will be tough to recover from.

These box office numbers are given by an independent box office tracking site Entertainment Pakistan.
